Halifax to Marrakech...the scenic route

We finally arrived in Marrakech safe and sound after 26 hours in transit...can you say tired!!! Not only did we endure the past day of travelling, but while in Montreal we decided to book a cooking class for tomorrow morning... no rest for these two weary travellers :))

must say after spending 8 hours waiting around at the Amsterdam Schiphol airport, I think I've had my fill for the next little while.  We killed time by checking out the shops...the Tulip House was by far the most unique place we came across - who doesn't like to buy fresh tulips while on route?!?...caught up on some sleep...or at least tried to...and found some grub to tide us over.  After waiting an hour to board our flight to Marrakech and finally getting settled in, we were told there was a strike by air traffic controllers in France and because of this our take off time was not going to be for another 1.5 hours.  Not the best news at this point in our travels, especially since we were also jammed into our plane like sardines!  But an hour later we were on our way, flying around French airspace instead of through it and arriving in Morocco at 7:30pm in the dark...3 flights and 4 time zones later.

Marrakesh was a bit of a surprise for me...8 degrees, windy and very quiet.  We passed through customs/immigration with a breeze, grabbed our luggage and found our lovely driver waiting patiently for us outside....yes he was waiting for us for two hours! After figuring out how to use the bank machine, we arrived at our quaint little Riad in the heart of the Medina about 10 minutes away.

We were greeted by our host, Jamal...his family lives at the Riad which has been in the family for two generations....one reason we chose to stay here.  What gracious and lovely people!!  We spent some time chatting with Jamal, was brought some Moroccan mint tea with homemade sweets...divine...and met his mother who will be making our breakfast in the morning; can't wait!!

Now that we are settled in, it's time for some shut eye so we will be ready for our newest adventure in the morning...learning how to make chicken tagine at a local cooking school.

Until then....
